Gender Awareness Group

The scientific disciplines represented within ACCENT are mainly chemistry and physics, areas in which the presence of women has traditionally been low in the past. Although the number of women scientists engaged in research on atmospheric composition change has steadily increased over the past decade, their number in high level positions is still quite low. ACCENT, ever since the first phase of the formulation of the proposal, has tried to involve women scientists and research groups led by women.

Furthermore, in order to implement the promotion of gender equal opportunities within the Network, a Gender Awareness Group has been constituted within ACCENT whose aim is encouraging gender equality, by monitoring and assessing those actions carried out by the Network in this context.

Members of the Gender Awareness Group are:

Andrea FlossmannCNRS
Michela MaioneUNIURB
Peter BuiltjesTNO
Eva SchüpbachUNI BERNE
Petra SeibertBOKU

Some of the actions that will be taken un this context are the following:

Women will be encouraged in giving keynote talks at conferences and workshops, setting a target to have at least 25% women participation at the above cited events.
The promotion of atmospheric science studies in schools, as a means of ensuring the participation of women and men on an equal basis in this field of work and mentoring between senior and junior female staff will be encouraged.
The linking with networks of women scientists in the project field will be promoted through female ACCENT participants already involved in such networks.
The promotion of the use of the most modern Information Technologies such as teleconference, internet, e-learning will allow avoiding time consuming travelling and make possible home work, thus accomplishing reconciliation of work and family life objective.

 FUTURE ACTIONS

ACCENT T&E is starting a joint Mentoring Programme with the EU Project ENSEMBLES; women and men are invited to participate as Mentors and Mentees from both the ACCENT and ENSEMBLES community. The programme will be launched during the ENSEMBLES General Assembly in November 2007 in Prague. More information can be found in this document.
