Objectives

The main objective of this task is to build a centre for all European resources of field observations by creating a portal that provides easy access to already existing facilities. This web-based service will be part of the ACCENT web portal. The first step in developing the data centre is the creation of a web portal that gives easy access to a first set of atmospheric databases and which later will be developed to facilitate access to all major relevant data sources for the general public and for scientific users.

This effort will be addressed by developing an interface allowing data originators to interactively provide and update metadata of their datasets. To improve the interaction with data originators and also quality assure and update the information in the field data database, regular surveys will be made annually. A workshop for data originators will also be organised.

A particular effort will be made to compile information about dataset from outside Europe. In particular Asia represents a major challenge in this respect as many studies are being conducted but in an unorganised way. North American data sources are generally easily available, but still work is needed to include this through the ACCENT database.

An online manual on how to use the database has been developed, but still a review is needed after initial testing by the users. A particular challenge, as seen from the users, is related to the differences in (meta) data definitions and file formats between different datasets. Initial investigations on how further harmonisation of data formats and protocols can be achieved will be made, but recognising that these issues may be to comprehensive to address in this activity.

To facilitate extraction of information from the field database improved search tools will be developed.

In collaboration with activity 11 (Quality assurance) the field data meta-database will be extended to also include information on the associated data quality of the datasets. This also requires a close collaboration with the various networks and projects.

A more general review of the field data meta-database will be made at the end of the second year to guide the further development.
