An international workshop on measurement techniques of nanoparticles was held at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland. The objectives were to summarise and discuss existing methods and problems associated with the measurement of nanoparticles and to provide a forum for current and future developments to discuss relevant issues, exchange research experiences and formulate needs. The workshop addressed the following topics:

  • Atmospheric nucleation processes
  • State-of-the-art techniques for measuring nanoparticles
  • Comparability and reliability of nanoparticle measurement techniques
  • Reliability of commercially available instrumentation
  • Technical problems and uncertainties for nanoparticle detection
  • Future developments and trends for measuring nanoparticles

The workshop was jointly organized and funded by ACCENT and the I3 EU EUROCHAMP project as well as INTROP (Interdisciplinary Tropospheric Research: from the Laboratory to Global Change). ACCENT is a network of excellence which goals are to promote a common European strategy for research on atmospheric composition change. The nanoparticle workshop is part of the activities Access to Infrastructures and Quality Assurance which objectives are to favour mobility of researchers within research infrastructures and to optimise and compare advanced measurement techniques for atmospheric probing. EUROCHAMP is an integrated infrastructures initiative for the integration of European simulation chambers for investigating atmospheric processes. The nanoparticle workshop is part of the networking activity N3 of EUROCHAMP and of its joint research activity JRA1 on development and refinement of analytical equipment for simulation chambers.
