IA3 Planned Activities

Planned activities for the Integrating activities on Calibration, co-ordination and synthesis of models from global to local scales

The main goal of this task is to establish a basis for coordinated research activities in regional and global scale modeling within the European research community and making the results from these activities available for the science community and for the public.

Activities include:

  • Model/model and model/measurement inter-comparisons

  • Development of databases for observations and emissions to improve the input for model evaluation and studies

  • Making the data in the common database (observed and modeled) available for a wider community of modeling groups for model validation and comparisons

  • Organizing modeling activities for future assessments (EU, IPCC, WMO, national activities)

  • Establishing closer links between different types of modeling: regional and global scale modeling, climate chemistry modeling.

The overall planned activities include:

  • Establish a benchmark set-up for model development and validation

  • Perform model development and validation for research application

  • Provide modelling tools for co-ordinated international assessment

  • Provide support to large measurement campaigns

Integrating activities

  • Code sharing in model development

  • Establish links to other activities within accent

  • Co-ordinate activities with other EU projects and link results from these activities with the modelling activities

  • Establish collaboration to activities outside ACCENT (e.g. interactive climate-chemistry models, Earth System models)

  • Support research activities in national programmes

Objectives

  • Establish a common benchmark facility for model development and validation.

  • Perform model/model and model measurement comparison.

  • Perform model studies to improve parameterisation in global and regional scale models, including code sharing.

  • Participate in preparation of models for future long-term model studies in connection with international assessments.

  • Make the modelling facility accessible to the European science community.

Deliverables

  • Establish benchmark facility for development of modelling tools and joint use models
  • Provide results from joint studies of model performance based on results presented at first model workshop. Plans are made for further work
