Post doctoral position at IRCELyon: ADOQ project: Activities in DOmestic environments and indoor air Quality : emissions, reactivity and secondary products

Domestic activities and cleaning products use generate emissions of volatile organic compounds which can react with atmospheric oxidants coming either from outside or electronic equipments. More specifically, terpenes can react with ozone to form secondary pollutants such as formaldehyde whose carcinogenicity is well-known and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Aerosols impact and effects on health have been observed and confirmed for many years now by epidemiologic studies showing the influence of the aerosol size. The smaller particles are the deepest they can go into the lungs reaching alveolar region. This is the case of Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA) formed by nucleation and VOC condensation processes. SOA consequently displays a very small particle diameter (< 2.5 µm). This implies the need to investigate secondary products (gases, SOA) formation pathways and chemical composition whose impact on human health is nowadays poorly known since it is still partly characterized. The aim of this work is to assess the importance of VOCs reactions and secondary products formation consequently to the use of cleaning products in indoor environments by: - Characterizing emissions linked to domestic activities and quantifying environmental parameters they are influenced by. - Estimating secondary products contribution to indoor air quality. The methodology lies on the combination of real atmospheres experiments (experimental house known as MARIA : Maison Automatisée pour des Recherches Innovantes sur l'Air: automated house for innovative air research) and simulated atmospheres (cleaning products evaluation in emission chambers under realistic, simplified and reproducible conditions). This combination is indispensible for products emissions identification, environmental parameters influence evaluation and secondary products mechanisms of formation understanding. This study will consist on an alternation of laboratory work to set up the analytical techniques and campaigns in MARIA at CSTB. For this project financed by ADEME (PRIMEQUAL program), the post-doctorant will be based at IRCELYON (Université Lyon 1 CNRS) and will perform punctual experiments at CSTB (Champs-sur-Marne), and at INERIS (Verneuil-en-Halatte). Key words: domestic activity, cleaning products, primary emissions, secondary emissions, reactivity, secondary organic aerosols, reaction products Required skills: The candidate has to be provided with a PhD in atmospheric chemistry and have knowledge on analytical chemistry.
