Post doctoral position at INERIS: Secondary Organic Aerosol formation and chemical composition study as part of the ChArMEx program

Mediterranean basin raises atmospheric chemistry scientists' interest because of its ideal geographic situation, at the edge of three continents, and the many pollution contributions it implies, under the influence of many megalopolis (Le Caire, Athaenes, Marseille…)). Pollutants emitted from these urban areas are submitted to a strong photochemistry leading to the formation of many secondary products and among them Secondary Organic Aerosols (SOA). Influencing climate and health, their understanding is still suffering from a lack of knowledge on their formation pathways and chemical composition. In the Mediterranean basin, they can interact with particles of different types, carbonaceous, inorganic, marine, crustal… which make this area an ideal region for SOA and gas-partiicle interaction study. To fully understand SOA formation, the simultaneous study of gaseous and particulate phases is essential. It will provide the lacking information on SOA precursor sources, formation pathways, the evolution of semi-volatile compounds formed from precursors oxidation... In this context, an original analytical method based on the simultaneous analysis of gaseous and particulate phases, allowing to study SOA as a whole, will be used. In particular; it will be applied to isoprene measurements in the gas phase and identification of its reactions products in both phases. This would help validate emissions inventories and improve conversion gas-particle models. This project will be set out on two aspects : field campaigns on a "Supersite" in Corsica as part of the European program ChArMEx, and campaigns in smog chambers and in particular in the EUPHORE chamber facilities (Valencia, Spain) allowing to study the reactivity of a target compound under controlled, reproducible and realistic experimental conditions. Key words : Secondary Organic Aerosols, reactivity, photochemistry, isoprene Required skills : The candidate has to be provided with a PhD in atmospheric chemistry and have knowledge on analytical chemistry Period: 24 months, from June 2010 to June 2012 Remuneration : 2000 euros/month nets Contact : Laura Chiappini: INERIS, laura.chiappini@ineris.fr, Tel: (33) (0) 3 44 55 65 89
