Postdoctoral position in atmospheric chemistry-climate modelling at KNMI

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) invites potential candidates to apply for the position of postdoctoral researcher associated with Atmospheric Chemistry-Climate Modelling:

General information

KNMI is an agency of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management of the Netherlands and is the national institute for weather, climate and seismology (www.knmi.nl). The Chemistry and Climate division of KNMI performs research into atmospheric composition change and its impact on climate and air quality. In collaboration with international partners the division develops the global chemistry transport model TM5 and integrates it in the climate model EC-Earth.

Information about the postdoctoral position (KNMI 2009/37)

The postdoctoral researcher will perform simulations for the past, present and future with the global chemistry-climate model TM5/EC-Earth. The results will be used to investigate the interactions which occur between climate change and air quality. The researcher will take part in the ongoing development of TM5/EC-Earth, e.g. by evaluating the model using available observations of the atmospheric composition. In the first instance, the researcher will contribute to the project CLIMAQS (Climate Impact and Air Quality Modelling for Policy Support), by producing chemical and meteorological boundary conditions for both European regional climate and air quality models. The main findings will be presented at both regional meetings, international conferences and the peer-reviewed literature.

The position is for a fixed term of 2 years, which may be prolonged for a maximum period of 5 years depending on the available funding and the performance of the candidate.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in atmospheric research
  • Strong knowledge of atmospheric chemistry
  • Experience with large-scale numerical models
  • Experience with programming in fortran90
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with external partners.
